A Party With Lots of Heart

Twelfth annual congenital heart disease party is this Sunday (12) at Lucie Stern Community Center in Palo Alto

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Valentine’s Day starts early this year for a few families.

All around the world, February 7-14 is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, an annual awareness effort to help educate the public about congenital heart defects, considered to be the most common type of birth defect and a leading cause of birth defect-related deaths worldwide. Here in the Bay Area, on Sunday, February 12, from 2:00-4:30pm at the Lucie Stern Community Center in Palo Alto, over 50 kids and their families will join for food, games, crafts, and the sharing of some miraculous stories. It’s the 12th annual Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day Party, hosted each year by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, home to one of the nation’s top 5 cardiology/heart surgery specialties, according to U.S. News Media Group.

About 500 children receive surgery to correct congenital cardiac defects at Packard Children’s each year. This party is not just a reunion for families with a common, heartfelt bond. It’s also a time to celebrate the many surgical and treatment miracles that have allowed these kids to live. The special guest list is comprised of patients who had congenital heart disease surgery in 2011 at Packard Children’s and their care teams. Babies through teens will attend.

Join us for a few pre-Valentine’s Day treats and to meet those for whom every day is a heart day.
