Contact us to learn more about our Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program.
The Adolescent Bariatric Surgery team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, is one of few programs nationwide to have achieved accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), in partnership with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
A MBSAQIP accreditation formally acknowledges the hospital’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients. As an accredited program the center has demonstrated that it meets the needs of patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, and patient-centered care.
The Adolescent Bariatric Surgery program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital started in 2004 as part of the Stanford Children’s Health Center for Healthy Weight. The team works closely with the adult Bariatric Surgery Center at Stanford Health Care. To-date the team has performed 35 bariatric surgeries on adolescent patients.
Adolescent bariatric surgery alters the stomach and/or intestines to treat severe obesity. Potential patients must meet strict criteria and are evaluated in Packard Children’s by the Pediatric Weight Clinic and Bariatric Surgery Program. Together with their families, they must also commit to lifelong lifestyle changes.
