Patient Care Units

Perioperative Services

Perioperative services includes the Pediatric Anesthesia Resource Center (PARC), the pre-operative area (pre-op), intraoperative services and the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The department serves pediatric patients before, during and after surgeries and procedures that require general anesthesia. Our services include urology, ENT, neurosurgery, general pediatric surgery, orthopedics, cardiac surgery, plastics, cardiology, interventional radiology, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and MRI/CT. Our multidisciplinary team supports not only Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford's seven operating rooms, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and ambulatory procedure unit (APU), but also the PACUs for the Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases and APU.

CVICU 

At the Betty Irene Moore Children’s Heart Center, our 36-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) cares for critically ill infants, children, adolescents and adults with congenital or acquired heart disease. We are staffed by more than 150 nurses who are specially trained in caring for children with heart disease. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford's CVICU is globally recognized for providing innovative pediatric advanced cardiac therapies such as heart failure treatments, heart transplants, ventricular assist devices (VADs) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

PICU 

The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a 36-bed unit. The PICU provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary and regionalized pediatric care to children from birth up to 21 years of age, with some exceptions. We provide a full range of medical and surgical care for severely ill children. We also offer pediatric residency training with 24-hour pediatrician coverage, an organized pediatric research program and community outreach.

Neonatal

The Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services’ interdisciplinary teams provide the innovative and comprehensive care needed to meet the complex needs of the most critically ill newborns. Our 40-bed level IV neonatal intensive care unit, 34-bed level II intermediate care nursery and 6-bed level II special care nursery at Dignity Health Sequoia work in partnership to support our infants and their families at every step of their health care journey.

Maternity

In the maternity unit at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, we provide nurturing care for new mothers and their babies and for women who require hospitalization during pregnancy. Our professional nurses are experienced in caring for new mothers and their babies, and we provide patients with 24-hour access to pediatric hospitalists, high-risk obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists and a full range of pediatric services should you or your baby require specialty care. We offer family-centered care that meets individual needs and supports keeping the mother and baby together whenever possible to promote bonding.

Labor and Delivery 

Our Labor and Delivery unit welcomes over 4,500 babies born each year. Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and our Labor and Delivery staff provide family-centered care, comfort and support to create the best possible environment for all deliveries. We support birth plans, offer comfort management and anesthesia 24 hours a day, and can provide immediate access to specialty care for both mom and baby should the need arise.

Bass Center

The Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases provides a fully integrated environment to facilitate the best possible care for patients with blood diseases and cancer. In addition, it provides a dedicated unit for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. The inpatient unit consists of 27 beds, including 12 private beds that are dedicated to stem cell transplant patients and 15 beds that are reserved for hematology and oncology patients. The Bass Center also has an outpatient clinic serving hematology, oncology and stem cell transplant patients and their families; a procedure room with capability for general anesthesia; onsite phlebotomy and laboratory services; a fully equipped infusion center for short stays; and a specialized pharmacy.

PCU 200

Patient care unit (PCU) 200 is a 26-bed cardiac step-down unit. The unit cares for patients with a variety of cardiac conditions and modalities, including pediatric heart-lung transplant; ventricular assist devices such as the Berlin heart, HeartWare, and HeartMate; and pediatric and adult cardiovascular surgery. In addition, the unit is capable of taking on overflow patients from other services. 

PCU 300

Patient care unit (PCU) 300 is a 26-bed pediatric acute-care medical unit. The populations served in this department include solid-organ transplant patients (kidney, liver and small bowel), nephrology, peritoneal dialysis, rheumatology, urology, gastroenterology, ENT, plastic surgery, trauma and general surgery. PCU 300 has a multidisciplinary team that includes clinical nurses, resource nurses, team leads, nursing assistants, unit secretaries, nursing management, various medical teams, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation services, Child Life specialists and the many other ancillary services that support our patient-and family-centered care.

PCU 400

Patient care unit (PCU) 400 is a 25-bed pediatric acute-care medical unit. The populations served in this department include neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonary medicine, cystic fibrosis, endocrinology, diabetics, orthopedics, trauma and general pediatrics. PCU 400 also has a specialized room to care for patients requiring isotope therapy that allows the patients’ family to stay close in an adjoining room. PCU 400 has a multidisciplinary team that includes clinical nurses, resource nurses, team leads, nursing assistants, unit secretaries, nursing management, various medical teams, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation services, Child Life specialists and the many other ancillary services that support our patient-and family-centered care.
