What to Expect

How to prepare for your visit to genetics services

If you or your child have been referred to Genetics Services, there are several things you can do to prepare.

  • Be sure to write down your main questions and concerns.
  • This is a copy of our intake form and will be sent to you prior to your visit or provided to you during your first visit with us. The Intake Form has questions about you or your child’s medical and family history, which will provide our service with important background information.

If you or your child take medication(s) related to the reason for referral, please bring the medication bottles or prescription labels to clinic. Copies of laboratory reports, imaging reports, and previous genetics evaluations may also be helpful.

Typically, clinic appointments last one hour or longer. We recommend bringing snacks or small toys for young children.

What to expect during your visit

A member of our team will meet with you to discuss the reason for referral and past medical history. Previous laboratory and imaging studies will be reviewed and a comprehensive physical examination will be performed, as necessary.

The geneticist or genetic counselor will discuss their recommendations, including possible genetic testing or referrals to other specialists. If genetic testing is recommended, labs may not be completed on the date of visit, as we often request insurance authorization. If genetic testing is ordered, these results will be reported to you once they are available.

Please note that insurance coverage of genetic services including genetic testing and genetic counseling varies. We encourage you to check with your insurance plan to determine coverage benefits.

What is the difference between a medical geneticist and a genetic counselor?

Medical geneticists are physicians with specialized training in clinical genetics and genomics. They evaluate, diagnose, manage and treat individuals with inherited conditions across all ages from birth to adulthood.

Genetic counselors are health professionals who combine the science of medical genetics and genomics with the art of counseling. They provide a wide variety of services including review of medical and family histories; assessments and education about genetic risks and options for genetic testing; and counseling to help patients understand genetic tests and results.
