Expert care for children with laryngeal obstruction

The team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford cares for the unique needs of children with laryngeal obstruction through a specialized treatment approach

Induced Laryngeal Obstruction

Evaluation, diagnosis and treatment

At Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, we have a multidisciplinary team working together to care for the unique needs of children 9 years old and above with induced laryngeal obstruction (ILO), which is a condition caused by an abnormal closing of the vocal cords. Instead of the vocal cords opening while a child inhales, they close together, which makes it more difficult for the air to pass through to the lungs.

Our ILO team provides a thorough evaluation prior to diagnosis and treatment to ensure that each child receives the best care possible. You and your child will meet with one of our pediatric otolaryngology specialists and speech-language pathologist to determine your child’s therapeutic options and to develop a treatment plan that works for the child and family.
